La divertida comedia de ‘Adventureland’ gira alrededor de todos esos problemas adolescentes. Ya saben, liarse con personas del género opuesto y si hablamos de ligar, nada mejor que ambientar la escena con “Looking for a Kiss” de New York Dolls. La canción formaba parte de su primer larga duración, publicado en julio de 1973, y que fue incluido en el puesto número 213 en el ranking de ’500 Mejores Discos de la Histoira’ que eleabró Rolling Stone.

Una de los temas más importantes de la BSO de ‘Animal House’ -’Desmadre a la americana’ en nuestro país- es “Sham Lama Ding Dong” de Llody Williams. Ésta es una de las canciones que en el film interpretan los maravillosos Otis Day & the Knights. En el film, DeWayne Jessie da vida a Otis Day pero el que canta es, en realidad, Lloyd Williams.

Es imposible que no hayas escuchado “louie Louie” en su versión original o en alguna de las múltiples versiones que se han hecho a lo largo y ancho de la historia de la música pop contemporánea. “Louie Louie” de The Kingsmen fue introducida en la BSO de ‘Animal House’ -’Desmadre a la americana’ en nuestro país- y es uno de las grandes temazos de juerga que se pueden escuchar en una fraternidad estadounidense, donde transcurre al acción de esta divertidísima comedia. Este clásico no llegó al número 1, pero sí el 2 el Billboard, donde permaneció durante seis semanas.

Rock Star. Cuando Mark Wahlberg se hizo heavy

En 2001 llegaba a los cine Rock Star, película protagonizada por Mark Wahlberg (El Planeta De Los Simios) y Jennifer Aniston (Friends). Del proyecto se encargaba el director Stephen Herek (Las Alucinantes Aventuras De Bill Y Ted). El filme está basado en la historia real acontecida al grupo inglés Judas Priest cuando su vocalista de toda la vida, el carismático Rob Halford, les dejó en 1991, siendo sustituido por Tim “Ripper” Owens, que se ganaba la vida cantando en Winter’s Bane o en la banda de versiones de los Priest British Steel –de hecho, la película iba a titularse en un principio Metal God, en referencia a uno de los himnos más célebres del combo fundado por K. K. Downing e Ian Hill–.

En la película, ambientada en 1985, Wahlberg interpreta a Chris Cole, un joven de clase media-baja que vive su amor por el rock cantando en Blood Pollution, un grupo de homenaje a sus héroes, los legendarios Steel Dragon –conjunto inventado para la película, al igual que pasase con Stillwater en Casi Famosos–. Cuando es expulsado de su banda, Chris se queda hecho polvo, pero una inesperada llamada telefónica cambiará su vida: ha sido elegido para reemplazar a Bobby Beers, el vocalista de Steel Dragon, que ha abandonado el grupo. Jennifer Aniston da vida a Emily, pareja sentimental de Chris y la única persona que confía en su talento.

Los realizadores también querían que las canciones que Steel Dragon interpretan en la película fueran escritas por grandes estrellas de rock y que tuvieran un sonido clásico de los 80. Así, Sammy Hagar escribió ‘Stand Up’; Peter Beckett y Steve Plunkett compusieron ‘Livin’ The Life’; Twiggy Ramirez (Marilyn Manson) hizo ‘Blood Pollution’; el Rey Midas del rock Desmond Child escribió ‘Wasted Generation’; y Brian Vander Ark compuso ‘Jesus In A T-Shirt’ y ‘Colorful’. En la grabación de estos temas intervinieron, además de los músicos que dan vida a los miembros de Steel Dragon y Blood Pollution, artistas de la talla de Guy Pratt, Brian McLeod, Jeff Scott Soto (ex Yngwie Malmsteen Band), Mike Matijevic o Myles Kennedy. La música incidental del film la escribe el ex Yes Trevor Rabin.

Una de las cosas más curiosas del rodaje fue el momento en el que se filma la escena del debut en directo de Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) con los Steel Dragon. Así que para esas tomas se decidió que la forma más práctica de recrear la excitación y la locura de una multitud para las cámaras era organizar un auténtico concierto de hard rock. Dicho evento, a beneficio de varias organizaciones pediátricas de ayuda contra el SIDA, tiene cual maestro de ceremonias a C.C. DeVille (guitarra de Poison) y abriendo el magnífico espectáculo se pudo ver a los Metal Shop, una formación que rendía tributo al sonido de los 80.

El grueso del concierto lo formaban bandas de la talla de Great White, W.A.S.P. o Metallica. Así que, después de las actuaciones de Metal Shop y Great White, Steel Dragon subió al escenario y empezó la filmación. Con esta idea consiguieron un realismo asombroso en las escenas sobre las tablas, recreando así el verdadero ambiente que se respira en un concierto. Además, y para que todo esto fuera un fiel reflejo de los espectáculos de la época, se prepararon coreografías para realizar sobre el escenario, una creativa iluminación, un vestuario acorde con una banda de la talla de Steel Dragon –que, hasta cierto punto, imitan a los mismísimos Judas Priest–, el láser y la pirotecnia necesaria para dar un buen show. Un esfuerzo que seguramente tuviese su punto negativo en la floja interpretación de Mark Wahlberg cuando le tocaba bajarse de la tarima.

El “Eye of the Tiger” de Survivor es una de esas canciones que se han quedado en la memoria colectiva ya que ha sido utilizada como preludio de múltiples actividades deportivas. Y, además, se ha quedado grabada en la memoria colectiva como la canción clave de la BSO de Rocky, aunque alguno le puede sorprender el hecho de que fue incluida en la tercera entrega y no en la primera, como erróneamente se suele recordar.
La canción fue compuesta por Survivor a expresa petición del propio Sylvester Stallone. Encabezó durante seis semanas la lista de Billboard Hot 100 y llegó al dos en la Pop Singles. También figura en el puesto 21 en la lista de Los Mejores Singles de Todos los Tiempos que elabora Billboard. El single alcanzó el estatus de platino, lo que implica unas ventas superiores a los dos millones de copias.

Madness – Baggy Trousers

‘Mean Machine’ -’Jugar Duro’ en España- nos dejó ver al entrañable Vinnie Jones ejerciendo de protagonista de la cinta. Este duro futbolista que aparece en múltiples films, como ’60 segundos’, ‘Lock & Stock’, ‘Snatch, Cerdos y Diamantes’ y tantas otros, da vida a un capitán de la selección inglesa de fútbol venido a menos y que acaba en prisión. En ella, Danny Meehan -Vinnie Jones- se va a encontrar a un alcaide muy interesado en el deporte del balompié y termina organizando un equipo con los reclusos para enfrentarse a los carceleros.
El argumento no es que sea muy original, sin embargo, la banda sonora que desfila por la película está llena de buenas canciones. Una de ellas es este Baggy Trousers de Madness. La canción fue uno de los singles extraídos de su disco ‘Absolutely’. Alcanzó el número 3 en la lista de singles del Reino Unido, en la que permaneció durante 20 semanas.

The Wonders – That Thing You Do!

‘That Thing You Do!’ -1996- narraba una historia muy musical. La de un grupo, en este caso llamado The Wonders, que llegaba a la fama gracias a un éxito, la canción que da título al film, pero que después de él, como se dice popularmente, no se comía un colín. Es decir, el típico grupo ‘one hit wonder’.
Cuatro jóvenes de chaqueta roja, pero no, no se equivoquen que no son The Kinks, con un mánager muy peculiar: Tom Hanks. Aunque es una historia de ficción, con un grupo ficticio, lo cierto es que no nos cuesta imaginarnos que esta canción hubiese triunfado durante la década de los años 60. Lo tiene todo.
